At Balisunsetcruise Destination, we hold a profound sense of ‘tanggung jawab’—responsibility—to protect and nurture the environment and people that make our experiences possible. Our commitment to sustainability is a core tenet of our business, integrated into every aspect of our operations, from vessel selection to community partnerships. This is a core pillar of our evaluation methodology.
Our 3-Pillar Sustainability Strategy
1. Environmental Conservation: Protecting Our Marine Paradise
We are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint and actively contributing to the conservation of Indonesia’s marine ecosystems.
- Marine Protection Partnerships: We are proud partners of the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in Sanur. A portion of every booking fee is donated to support their vital work in marine conservation, training, and public outreach. We actively educate our guests on the importance of the Coral Triangle, the world’s epicenter of marine biodiversity.
- Strict No Single-Use Plastic Policy: All vessels in our curated collection are contractually obligated to be free of single-use plastics. We provide filtered water in reusable carafes, and all amenities are sourced in biodegradable or reusable packaging.
- Reef-Safe Initiative: We provide complimentary, high-quality, reef-safe sunscreen on all our cruises and educate guests on the damaging effects of common chemical sunscreens on coral reefs.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: In partnership with the Indonesian carbon-offset platform Jejak.in, we calculate the carbon footprint of each cruise and invest in certified reforestation and mangrove restoration projects in areas like Kalimantan and North Java to ensure our operations are carbon-neutral.
- Waste Management: We mandate that all partner vessels adhere to a strict ‘pack in, pack out’ policy and utilize advanced wastewater treatment systems where possible, ensuring nothing is discharged into the ocean.
2. Community Empowerment: Investing in Local Prosperity
We believe that luxury tourism should create tangible benefits for local communities.
- Local Employment & Fair Wages: We are committed to a 95% Indonesian workforce across our operations. All our staff and the crews of our partner vessels receive fair, above-market wages, comprehensive health insurance (BPJS Kesehatan), and social security benefits (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).
- Sourcing from Local Enterprises: We prioritize local suppliers. Our culinary ingredients are sourced from organic farms in Bedugul, our handcrafted amenities from artisan workshops in Ubud, and the traditional ‘ikat’ textiles used in our decor are sourced from cooperatives in Nusa Penida.
- The Juara Community Fund: As part of Juara Holding Group, we contribute a percentage of our annual profits to a dedicated community fund. This fund supports educational scholarships and small-scale infrastructure projects (such as clean water access) in the coastal villages where our crews and their families live.
3. Cultural Preservation: Honoring Balinese Heritage
We aim to provide experiences that are not only luxurious but also culturally respectful and enriching.
- Authentic Experiences: We facilitate respectful interactions with local culture, such as offering private ‘canang sari’ (offering) making workshops onboard or arranging visits to community-run seaweed farms in Nusa Lembongan.
- Supporting Traditional Crafts: We commission local artisans for guest gifts and onboard decor, providing a platform for their craft and ensuring the economic viability of these traditional skills.
- Certified Local Guides: All our land-based excursions are led by guides certified by the Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia (HPI), ensuring our guests receive accurate, respectful, and insightful cultural interpretation.
